Baggage handlers at Rome Fiumicino airport commenced industrial action on August 3rd that has seen up to 100 aircraft depart without passengers’ baggage.
The strike is reported to be a protest against job cuts specified in the impending deal between flag carrier Alitalia and Etihad Airways, which is due to be finalized on August 8th and will see Etihad purchase a 49% stake in Alitalia.
Union representatives have agreed to discuss the matter with Etihad CEO James Hogan, but local media reports that the strike may cause Hogan to push for more radical reforms within Alitalia.
The strike has been heavily criticized as untimely and unhelpful when the Italian tourism industry is experiencing a downturn.
