Indian airline IndiGo has entered the wide-body space with a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 70 A350 family options, as the carrier embarks on the next stage of ‘addressing the rapidly evolving needs of the Indian customer and [its] nation’.
Deliveries of the new aircraft – the exact configuration of which is yet to be decided – are scheduled to start from 2027. Combined with the almost 1,000 A320 family aircraft still to be delivered, this new order leaves IndiGo ‘well positioned to expand and densify its unparalleled network’ whilst simultaneously helping to support the Indian government’s mission of becoming the third largest economy before the end of the decade.
“Today’s historic moment marks a new chapter for IndiGo and will further shape the future of the airline and for Indian aviation at the same time,” commented CEO of IndiGo Pieter Elbers, who hopes the new widebody fleet will “allow IndiGo to embark on its next phase of becoming one of the leading global aviation players”.
In June 2023, the airline placed the largest ever single aircraft order by any airline for 500 aircraft with Airbus. Its current outstanding order book also includes a mix of A320neo, A321neo and A321xlr aircraft.
