IndiGo is further expanding its domestic capacity with two new flights to North India from Delhi and Mumbai. The flights will commence from March 2, 2023 with the Delhi-Itanagar flight routing over Kolkatta and the new direct flight between Mumbai and Silchar in Assam.

Apart from expanding IndiGo’s domestic presence, these new flights will give more options to passengers to and from the remote locations in North-East India. No other airline presently offers these connections. In fact, the new flight between Mumbai-Silchar will cut down the air travel time by half.

Vinay Malhotra, head of global sales at IndiGo, said: “As part of our vision to enhance domestic accessibility, we have introduced new connections between Bombay-Silchar and Delhi-Itanagar via Kolkata. These flights have been added in response to the increasing demand for travel to these destinations. We are confident that many customers will benefit with the commencement of these connections, particularly as the summer season approaches.”

Meanwhile, Indian aviation guidelines mandate airlines to operate a certain percentage of their flights to underserved airports. The northeast region of India also falls under that category. Recently, Vistara was fined over $84,000 for not operating the required number of flights to this region in April 2022.

Going ahead, SpiceJet is also planning to increase its services to northeast India’s Pakyong in Sikkim from Delhi.
