IndiGo has digitalized its operations by removing technical paper manuals that will remove about 40kg weight from each of its Airbus aircraft. Post attaining a nod of approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) the airline has replaced the technical paper manuals from its Airbus cockpits with iPads.
The latest move is part of the Less Paper Cockpit (LPC) program under which the airline launched the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) in 2015 and reduced 25 kg of paper on its Airbus fleet by replacing paper charts and manuals with iPads.
The 2015 initiative has helped the airline declutter its cockpit, made it easier to update the charts digitally, and also helped reduce its annual carbon footprint.
Captain Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President, Flight Operations, IndiGo, said: “The initiative will not only further diminish the usage of paper but also help the airline to reduce its carbon footprint. The iPad allows pilots to access information quickly and nimbly, making decisions in the cockpit safer and more efficient. And with IndiGo being the first airline in the region to launch EFB on its Airbus fleet, we are leading the way for other airlines to follow suit.”
The airline is vigorously engaging latest technology and digitization methods to optimise its operations. In January the airline deployed sensor technology to scan the life vests on its aircraft, thus cutting the inspection time on each aircraft.
The airline also launched 'Digital e-logbook' for pilots that provides consistency of data and format, leading to safer and more efficient operations.
