IAG signs largest SAF deal to date with Twelve
The International Airlines Group (IAG) has announced its largest ever sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) purchase to date with e-SAF producer Twelve. Under the 14 year contract, Twelve will supply IAG with 260 million gallons (approximately 785,000 tonnes) of fuel to support its five European airlines (British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and LEVEL). IAG is the first European airline group to announce an e-SAF deal, which uses Twelve’s proprietary power-to-liquid technology (therefore avoiding feedstock limitations other SAF production pathways face). The group used approximately 12% of the world’s total SAF supply in 2023 and the new agreement means it has now secured one third of the SAF needed to reach its 2030 target of using one million tonnes a year. “We would like to see similar projects scale in Europe, and we look forward to working with governments across our key markets to build a SAF industry to deliver jobs, economic growth and a stable supply of SAF,” said IAG CEO Luis Gallego. Fuel deliveries will commence as early as 2025 from Twelve’s Washington-based demonstration plant currently under construction. The process converts renewable energy, water and CO2 into hydrocarbons, the essential building blocks for fuels.
