Hong Kong Airport records 2.1 million passengers in January 2023

Hong Kong Airport passenger traffic has shown a strong recovery in January 2023 with almost 28% Year-On-Year (Y-O-Y) rise. The Airport Authority Hong Kong recently released air traffic figures of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for January 2023.

The data reveals that KHIA registered around 2.1 million passengers in January 2023, with over 80,000 passengers daily at peak, representing around 40% of pre-pandemic levels. Flight movements saw a year-on-year increase of 34.9% to 16,215, while cargo throughput dropped 26.4% to 288,000 tonnes compared to the same month last year.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume increased year on year by 466 % to 7.6 million. Flight movements and cargo throughput saw declines of 1.7% and 18.2% to 142,920 and 4.1 million tonnes respectively.

Meanwhile, due to the relaxation of travel restrictions, passenger traffic recovered strongly particularly for the Hong Kong residents compared to same time last year.

Traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Japan recorded the most significant increases. Strong passenger demand was observed in the second half of the month due to the Lunar New Year holiday. Besides, re-opening of Chinese market led to significant passenger recovery between Hong Kong and Mainland China.
