Hawaiian Airlines has reported that it earned $70 million, or $1.15 a share, during the third quarter compared with $35.6 million, or 56 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue, dropped 1.2 percent to $631.7 million from $639.5 million.
Aircraft fuel, including taxes and delivery, fell 42.1 percent to $105.5 million from $182.2 million.
Hawaiian Airlines has also announced plans to add 180-degree lie-flat seats to its A330 aircraft premium cabins. The airline flies the A330 on the majority of its North American and international routes.
The 180-degree seats will use a seat platform to fold into 76-inch beds. They will also feature in-flight entertainment on large-format tablets and be equipped with a telescoping tablet arm to adjust viewing angle and comfort.
The seats will be installed in a 2-2-2 configuration.
“We believe that this is going to usher in a new premium service in Hawaii,” said airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley. “This new service is going to underscore our mission to be the premiere destination carrier and it’s going to take our signature in-flight hospitality to an entire new level. It’s been designed to recognize that we’re primarily a leisure-based carrier, catered to families traveling to the vacation of a lifetime.” The first newly outfitted aircraft is expected to enter Hawaiian’s long-haul network in the second quarter of 2016. Lie-flat seats will be installed in the remaining 22 A330 aircraft in September 2016 through 2017.
The new seats were developed in partnership with Italian manufacturer Optimares.
