Gulf Air signed an agreement with Boeing on July 17, 2025, for the purchase of 12 787 Dreamliner jets with options for six more. The Bahrain-based airline looks to further develop its international network.
Once finalised, the order will bring the carrier's firm orderbook to 14 of the widebody jets.
“This agreement marks a transformative step in Gulf Air's strategic growth journey as we expand our global footprint and modernise our fleet with one of the industry's most advanced and efficient aircraft,” said Gulf Air Group chairman Khalid Taqi. “The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has proven to be an exceptional aircraft for our long-haul operations, and this new order reflects our confidence in its performance, passenger appeal and contribution to our sustainability goals.”
“This investment in the 787 Dreamliner demonstrates Gulf Air's commitment to new technology and sustainable development, reinforcing Bahrain's position in the aviation sector,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO and president Stephanie Pope.
The aircraft will be powered by GE Aerospace engines and Gulf Air valued the order at up to $4.6bn, based on list price.
Both companies also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly explore potential for localising MRO operations in Bahrain. The airline said the agreement “further cements” its commitment to positioning itself as a key aviation hub in the region.
The airline is also commencing its three weekly flights to JFK from October 1, 2025. The route will be operated by its 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
Gulf Air Group CEO Jeffrey Goh said the company looks forward to its return to the North American market.
Gulf Air will initially operate its flights from the current Terminal One at JFK, intending to transition to the airport's New Terminal One in June 2026.
