The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has banned some older aircraft from its airspace over safety and security fears.
A DC8-63F has been banned for undertaking maintenance at a UAE airport without obtaining a license from GCAA, while a DC-9 aircraft was banned for safety and security reasons and a B-747-200 for violating UAE airspace regulations. Some 19 airlines have been sanctioned by the GCAA in 2010.
“Being the authority in charge of the civil aviation sector in the UAE, the GCAA will not hesitate to take any action in the future against any aircraft and against any local or international air operator in the event of any violation of the applicable instructions in the UAE or non-compliance with any security and safety standard. The GCAA, represented by its teams and inspectors, seeks to ensure that all aircraft operating in the UAE comply with the highest international safety and security standards,” said Saif Mohammad Al Suwaidi, director general, GCAA.
