The project for upgrading and development of Gan International Airport, Maldives has been granted to a successful bidder after a five-day stand-still period. The project is financed through a loan from the Exim Bank of India and aims to upgrade the airport terminal with state-of-the-art facilities capable of accommodating 1.5 million passengers per annum.
The project will also include the development of duty-free shops, restaurants, lounge facilities, cargo facilities with cold storage for commercial and tourism use, as well as a new control tower and fire station. Additionally, the project will encompass the development of airport roads and parking areas.
The airport authorities claim that this initiative will bring economic and social advancement to the southern provinces and expand the role of Addu City as an aviation hub. Besides, the project will create thousands of jobs directly and indirectly and contribute to the prosperity to the Southern city of Maldives.
