Fuel supply disrupted at Johannesburg airport

Fuel supply disrupted at Johannesburg airport

Although no flights at South Africa’s Johannesburg O.R.Tambo International Airport have been disrupted, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is experiencing a breakdown in its A1 fuel supply to the airport due to “off-specification” fuel in the pipeline between National Petroleum Refiners (NATREF) rendering 7 million liters of Jet A1 stored in two tanks unusable. The tanks have been isolated and certified fuel in the other tanks is currently being used for refueling but the airport was left with just under one a half day’s supply of fuel on Friday.
In a statement, ACSA said: “The fuel supply industry, led by Air BP, is working tirelessly to address the situation.”
The airport receives fuel via two alternative supply routes in addition to the primary NATREF source and ACSA is also working closely with airlines on a number of measures, including the uptake of fuel at ACSA’s other airports, to minimize the potential negative impact on airport operations.
