flydubai has signed an agreement to purchase 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace, which will be used to power the airline’s new fleet of Boeing 787-9s.

The agreement, signed at Dubai Airshow 2025, also includes spare engines and a long-term services agreement to support the carrier's launch of long-haul operations.

The new widebody fleet will enable flydubai to expand its international network and increase capacity on existing routes. flydubai currently serves more than 135 destinations across 57 countries.

The airline added that it selected the GEnx-1B for its “best-in-class” performance, durability, and fuel efficiency.

"The performance and durability of our engines will play an integral role in the success of our operations and fleet expansion plans, especially as we prepare to welcome the Boeing 787 aircraft to our fleet in the coming years,” said Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai.

Since its introduction in 2011, the GEnx engine family has accumulated more than 70 million flight hours. It is also GE’s fastest-selling high-thrust engine to date, with more than 3,900 engines currently in service and backlog, including spare units.

The GEnx engine powers two-thirds of all Boeing 787 aircraft currently in operation, and is certified to run on current sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends.

GE Aerospace has a significant on-ground presence in the UAE, with more than 240 employees and offices in the Abu Dhabi and Dubai Airport Freezone.

It has partnership, engineering, and MRO facilities across the country, and a Middle East Technology Center where it researches and develops solutions for the region’s hot and harsh climate.

Today, GE Aerospace also announced an investment of $50 million in a new On Wing Support (OWS) facility at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub in Dubai.
