Finnair passengers increase in May 2024
Finnair passenger data for May 2024 shows a growth in passengers compared to the same time last year, alongside a capacity increase. Finnair carried 983,500 passengers, a 2.4% increase than the same period last year, with capacity rising by 6% overall compared to the prior year period. Passenger numbers increased by 0.8% in Asia, by 4.4% in Europe and by 5.8% in the North Atlantic region. However, Middle Eastern traffic decreased by 7.4% and by 6.1% for all domestic traffic. Finnair's overall capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), increased in May by 6.0% Year-on-Year (YoY) as additional narrow-body capacity was deployed after wet leases to British Airways ended in March 2024. Capacity increased by 8.0% with the inclusion of wet leases, due to Finnair’s co-operation with Qantas. Finnair's Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs), increased by 2.0%, with particular uplift in North Atantic traffic. RPKs increased in Asia by 1.6% year-on-year. They increased by 7.7% in the North Atlantic and by 2.3% in Europe. RPKs decreased by 5.4% in the Middle East and by 5.7% in domestic traffic. Finnair's overall passenger load factor (PLF) declined by 2.7 percentage points to 71.3%. In specific areas, PLF was 70.2% in Asia, 79.1% in the North Atlantic, 72.3% in Europea, 60.8% in Middle East and 61.0% in Finland. The airline's total cargo tonnes increased by 12.7% year-on-year in May due to growth in all traffic areas exclusive of domestic cargo traffic. Revenue cargo tonne kilometres increased by?9.1%. In May, 77.2% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule, down from 86.5% last May. According to Finnair, “the on-time performance decline was due to the closure of one of the runways at Helsinki Airport for renovation work”.
