Pakistan's federal financial enforcement agency, the Federal Board of Revenue, has unfrozen Pakistan International Airlines’ accounts after an issue of non-payment of outstanding dues was resolved.
The airline’s spokesperson Abdullah Khan confirmed the unfreezing of the accounts to national newspaper The Daily Pakistan, who stated that the Federal Board of Revenue’s Large Tax Unit had been in constant contact with the carrier.
The decision to initially freeze 28 of the airline’s accounts occurred during the visit of an EASA delegation, which was investigating lifting the ban on flights to the continent first imposed after a May 2020 crash in Karachi. In a double blow for the airlines, Pakistan State Oil also issued a threat to stop oil supply to the airlines pending settlement of outstanding dues.
Earlier this year, the Pakistan government announced plans to privatise the loss-making airline, following an amendment in the law by Parliament.
