The newest African carrier set for launch, FastJet, has opened talks with potential clients at embassies and international oil companies in advance of its first flight next month, while it is also finalizing an agreement to acquire more A319s. FastJet aims to use a five A319-strong fleet on routes to Tanzania and Kenya from Dar-es-Salaam.
FastJet has been meeting with oil companies as potential clients as its main shareholder is Lonrho Plc, an oil, mining and agricultural group. Governments and some companies will only sanction travel on approved carriers – FastJet is aiming to be one of those carriers.
Backed by easyJet founder Stelios Haji- Ioannou and some powerful financiers, FastJet is likely to achieve its aim of growing its fleet through purchasing new aircraft – likely the A320neo or 737Max – within five years.
Although there are a great many investors looking at African aviation with some hesitation, this is one airline that has the backing and expertise to be a significant player in the market in a few years.
