The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will provide over $2bn in grants to improve airport infrastructure across the US.

Around $1.9bn for 519 grants was announced on September 6, 2024, under the airport improvement program (AIP). An additional $269 million in supplemental discretionary grants were announced last year to fund 62 projects at 56 US airports.

The competitive grant programme under the AIP assists airport owners and operators in the development and improvement of US' airport system.

"The Biden-Harris Administration is funding projects across the country that are making airports safer and more efficient for the passengers who travel through them and for the airport and airline employees who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make these complex systems run as smoothly as possible,” said US secretary of transportation Pete Buttigieg.

FAA associate administrator for airports Shannetta Griffin said: "Today, we invest in our future – enhancing safety, improving sustainability and ensuring our infrastructure meets the needs of the traveling public."

This is the fifth round of the AIP grants and it is the largest in the programme's history.
