The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investing $27 million into universities across the US, with research teams working on a variety of environmental aviation topics including sustainable aviation fuels, aircraft emissions and noise impact. The funding forms part of the FAA’s ASCENT programme.
Eleven universities will benefit from the $27.2 million package, with the money to be ‘matched in-kind’ by the Centre’s partners under the grants programme one-to-one cost sharing agreement. “The work of these teams is a cornerstone of the FAA’s sustainability efforts,” highlighted FAA administrator Mike Whitaker, adding that “the entire aviation industry can leverage this research” to have beneficial impact while working toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
“The FAA has invested more than $155 million in grant funds since the ASCENT research effort began and the work has driven forward our environmental effort significantly,” said assistant administrator for policy, international affairs, and environment Laurence Wildgoose.
