The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it is investigating a close call between a Delta Air Lines flight 2983 and four US Air Force jets.
The news follows the American Airlines' jet crashing into Potomac River in late January this year after colliding with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter.
On Friday, March 28, at around 3:15pm local time, the Delta A319 aircraft was cleared for takeoff at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. At that time, four US Air Force T-38 Talons were inbound to Arlington National Cemetary for a flyover.
“The Delta aircraft received on onboard alert that another aircraft was nearby,” said the FAA in a statement. “Air traffic controllers issued corrective instructions to both aircraft.”
A Delta spokesperson said: “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people. That's why the flight crew followed procedures to manoeuvre the aircraft as instructed.”
Delta had an incident last month where its aircraft flipped upside down upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport. No fatalities were reported, though some of the 80 onboard were injured.
