The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated a study into the safety of mobile electronic devices used by passengers. Although mobile telephones will not be included in the study and will remain banned for use in flight, other devices such as laptops, tablet computers, e-readers and smartphones (for Internet uses) are being considered with the aim to lift a ban on their use during takeoffs and landings.
The FAA said that "widespread consumer use of portable electronic devices" has forced it to reexamine its policies.
"With so many different types of devices available, we recognize that this is an issue of consumer interest," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.
"Safety is our highest priority, and we must set appropriate standards as we help the industry consider when passengers can use the latest technologies safely during a flight."
