FAA bans US airlines from overflying Syria

The US FAA has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) ordering all US-based airlines and commercial operators to cease overflights through Syrian airspace, citing a "serious potential threat" to civil aircraft.

In a statement, the FAA said: "Based on an updated assessment of the risk associated with such operations and the lack of any requests from operators wishing to fly in this airspace, we believe it prudent to prohibit U.S. operators from flying into, out of and over Syria.”

The FAA's previous so-called Notice to Airmen had strongly advised U.S. operators against flying over Syria.

The text of the NOTAM reads:
