Employees of bankrupt Cypriot airline, Eurocypria, have been told by the house, finance minister Charilaos Stavrakis, they will be paid next week for any outstanding hours worked before the airline went bust.
The government has also promised to launch an investigation into what went wrong with the airlines in a bid to bring those responsible to justice.
Eurocypria staff have been offered employment with Cyprus Airways although as that airline is also under pressure to cut costs to survive, not all will be offered a place. Even though this move solves one problem, the government is aware it may have simply transferred the problem: “If we are honest with ourselves, the problems have been transferred to Cyprus Airways,” said Stavrakis. “But Cyprus Airways has a future and prospects, provided that the management and workers agree on a realistic restructuring plan, which will reduce the millions in losses to zero.”
