EU ATTEMPTS TO FORCE IRELAND TO HIKE CORPORATION TAX

The European Union is reported to be trying to force Ireland to agree to a big rise in its rate of corporation tax as a condition of an €80 billion economic rescue package.

Ireland has not yet made a formal request for EU funds and Taoiseach spokesperson Brian Cowen has denied any discussions have taken place.
