Emirates suspends flights to Northern Iraq

Emirates has announced the suspension of flights to the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, citing “operational reasons”. The suspension will take effect from August 12th.

Emirates has not specifically attributed the suspension to safety concerns over the ongoing conflict in the region, instead stating that it had carried out “a review of operations to ensure the best utilization of its aircraft fleet for its overall business objectives."

The airline will continue to fly to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and the southern oil hub of Basra.

Emirates recently said it was taking precautionary measures and rerouting flights around Iraqi airspace following the aftermath of the MH17 disaster.
