easyJet cancels over 100 flights from Gatwick in last 24 hours

About 15,000 passengers were affected after easyJet cancelled over 100 flights in last 24 hours from its Gatwick base due to thunderstorm.

On Sunday, easyJet cancellations included two flights to and from Cyprus, departures and arrivals serving various Greek islands and links to other distant destinations such as Antalya in Turkey and the Canary Islands grounding over 60 flights. British Airways also grounded a handful of flights.

Many flights were severely delayed, including a wait of over six hours on easyJet from Gatwick to Paris CDG and to Barcelona.

A spokesperson for easyJet said: “Thunderstorms in the Gatwick area which restricted the number of arrivals and departures on Sunday 11 June unfortunately resulted in disruption at London Gatwick airport, including some diversions and cancellations which is having a knock-on impact this morning as a number of aircraft are out of position.”

“We are doing all possible to minimise the impact on our customers, providing those on cancelled flights with options to rebook or receive a refund as well as hotel accommodation and meals where required,” the spokesperson added.

A further 55 flights were expected to be grounded today.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued further thunderstorm warnings for parts of the United Kingdom until 9 PM Monday, June 12. A yellow weather warning for rain and wind in southern England, is also currently active.

In addition to the weather conditions, easyJet has also been struggling with staff shortages in recent months leading to delays and cancellations on a number of flights.
