Delta Air Lines chief operating officer and executive vice president Mike Spanos is departing from the company, it said in a filing. The departure is effective as of August 31, 2024. No replacement has been announced to date.
Spanos joined the airline only in June last year. He brought with him no aviation experience. However, he had previously served as CEO of American amusement park chain Six Flags, as well as executive roles at PepsiCo. He also serves as a member of the board for US convenience retailer and pizza chain Casey's.
The Wall Street Journal reported Delta CEO Ed Bastian had said that Spanos had said earlier this year he was considering new opportunities. The outlet had reportedly obtained a company memo. The report added that that airline does not currently plan to replace Spanos.
The memo also reportedly said that EVP and chief customer experience officer Allison Ausband and chief of operations John Laughter will now report directly to the CEO, after having previously reported to Spanos.
