Delta Airlines posts quarterly profits rise of 39%

Delta Airlines has profited from being unaffected by the grounding of Boeing 737 Max jets.

The airline reported a 39.3% rise in profit during its second-quarter 2019 results, which it attributes to higher fares and flying fuller planes.

Net income rose to $1.44 billion in the quarter, compared with $1.04 billion a year earlier.

Total operating revenue rose 6.5% to $12.54 billion.

Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer, said: “Our record June quarter financial and operating results demonstrate that we are translating our powerful brand and competitive advantages into earnings growth, margin expansion and solid returns for our owners.

"Our people are the best in the business and I’m proud to recognise their hard work and dedication this quarter with an additional $518 million toward next year’s profit sharing."

The Atlanta-based carrier recently announced that it carried 18.9 million customers across its global network in June 2019 – an all-time monthly record.
