Delta Air Lines has replaced its old barcode system for luggage identification with RFID technology, also known as radio frequency identification. The $50 million investment included deploying 4,600 scanners and 3,800 bag tag printers at airports around the world. Conveyer belt loaders have sensors that give the green light if the suitcase is headed to the right aircraft, and a red light if it’s not, so a baggage handler can redirect it.
