Cranfield University takes delivery of Saab 340

Cranfield University has introduced a new Saab 340 s/n-456 for the purpose of aviation training to students.

Graham Braithwate, professor of Aerodynamics at Cranfield University, said: “This aircraft will be used for 23 different UK universities to teach their aviation engineering students what aviation is really about, bringing mathematics off a page and turning it into flight dynamics for real.”

Work has been undertaken to transform this former airliner into a flying classroom and laboratory.

Work on the ex Northwest Airlines aircraft has seen major modification package including a heavy check and full painting in order to bring it back to top notch condition after being parked for a few years.

When not flying students, the aircraft will serve as a platform for doing research and testing new equipment, pushing aviation technology forwards.

The Saab 340 represents a milestone in further developing the cooperation between Saab and Cranfield University.
