Construction on largest 2G biofuels plant in southern Europe begins
Cespa and Bio-Oils have commenced construction on the largest 2G biofuels (produced from agricultural waste or used cooking oils) plant in Southern Europe, doubling the group’s current capacity to one million tons per year. The new facility, to be built in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, will be funded by a 1.2bn euro ($1.3bn) investment and is expected to be operational by 2026. Teresa Ribera, third vice-president and minister for the ecological transition and the democratic challenge, said: “It is not enough to just change the color of molecules or electrons; the industries behind them, the services behind them, are a great opportunity to reindustrialize and modernize our productive fabric”. The new plant will have a ‘minimal environmental impact’, using renewable hydrogen, 100% renewable electricity and different heat recovery and energy efficient systems. It is also estimated to emit 75% less Co2 than a traditional biofuel plant. The majority of the feedstock for SAF production will consist of agricultural waste and used cooking oils, delivered through a long-term agreement with Apical. In addition to SAF, the facility will also produce biogas essential for the production of green hydrogen.
