In the early hours of this morning (UK time) the topic of engine leasing took centre stage at Airline Economics Growth Frontiers Hong Kong virtual conference. Joseph O’Brien, from Engine Lease Finance, moderated a stellar panel of engine leasing executives to discuss the pandemic’s impact on the sector examining how this has affected long-term planning and business models and most importantly the impact on engine types and values.
Rolls-Royce Partners Finance’s Bobby Janagan responded to the same questions on a podcast interview with Airline Economics editor Victoria Tozer-Pennington. For Janagan, value impairments are less concerning right now than determining which of his customers are going to survive and prosper long-term and who are not going to recover from this downturn. Picking which customers to support to create a “win-win” for them and the engine lessor is the difficult, but critical challenge, faces all lessors right now.

The banking panel, moderated as always by CA-CIB’s Jose Abramovici, touches on the need to support airline clients and again determine who those survivors are going to be, which is a challenge for all. The lessor financing panellists, moderated by Maples’ James Kinsley, remark on how access to bank financing has become more difficult for many companies without those strong relationships. Both panels host illuminating discussions about the challenges of aviation financing through this crisis as well as some thoughts on the future of the sector.
