Commercial aircraft CO2 emissions surpass 2019 levels in September, Cirium reports

Commercial aircraft CO2 emissions from commercial passenger and freighter aircraft surpassed 2019 levels for the first time in September this year, according to Cirium EmeraldSky analytics. 

September 2024 CO2 emissions increased 1% over 2019, in addition to a 3.5% increase in total flight hours. 

However, the report added that CO2 emissions from passenger aircraft had decreased 2%, though, emissions from freight aircraft have grown to 12% of total emissions. In 2019, freighter aircraft had amounted to 9% of total emissions.
