In a stock exchange filing on March 26, China Southern Airlines confirmed that it was in negotiations with American Airlines concerning a possible major strategic cooperation which would involve, among others, the proposed issue of shares of the company and other business cooperation. In the filing, China Southern stresses that the possible cooperation is subject to the internal approvals by the board of directors and shareholders, the relevant governmental authorities, and a final legal contract, none of which have been sought as yet. The airline has issued the statement as a warning for its shareholders and potential investors when dealing in the securities of the company. Trading, which was halted when rumours of the possible link up first surfaced on March 23, has now resumed.
