China Airlines recently launched its first passenger flight from Taipei to Singapore using sustainable aviation fuel, as part of airline’s aims to reduce carbon emissions despite higher costs. The airline used 10% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and 90% traditional jet fuel for the flight reducing the carbon emissions by 8%.
Passengers onboard the flight showed their support through low-carbon plant-based meals. Net zero carbon emissions was achieved by round-trip sustainability demonstration flight through the redemption of carbon credits.
In 2017, China Airlines became the first airline in Taiwan to use SAF for the ferry flights of its new A350-900 aircraft. The next-generation of energy-efficient A321neo passenger aircraft introduced in 2021 followed suit as well. To date 15 new aircraft have made their ferry flights on SAF.
The airline has been named a constituent stock for Emerging Markets in the “Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI)” for seven consecutive years so far.
