CAAB plans to sell 12 parked aircraft, faces resistance from defunct airlines

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is planning to sell the 12 aircraft parked at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The operators of these aircraft have ignored the authority’s repeated requests to pay the overdue and the parking fees. According to a report in Bangladesh Financial Express there are eight aircraft belonging to United Airways, two belonging to Regent Airways, and one belonging to GMG Airlines.

All the three are Bangladesh-based defunct airlines. GMG Airlines ceased operations in 2012, United Airways in 2016, and Regent Airways in 2020.  The report also says that the airlines are planning to restart their operations and CAAB’s attempt at selling off the planes is putting a dent in the process. As per the airport management, the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is about to undergo an upgrade and the aircraft are taking up the space allocated for a cargo terminal.

The report further adds that the CAAB has rejected GMG Airlines' application to sell its plane to fund the resumption of operations. Regent Airways and United Airways still have relaunch applications pending with plans to sell their parked aircraft and generate capital, pending approval of CAAB.
