Brussels Airlines says new "green fares" to be "a bit more expensive

Lufthansa Group carrier Brussels Airlines said passengers can now "contribute themselves to reducing the carbon footprint of air travel for flights to and from Europe or North Africa" by opting for a "green fare" ticket.

"The ticket is a bit more expensive, but the extra contribution allows Brussels Airlines to buy more sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)", the carrier said in a February 16 statement, adding it hopes to halve its emissions by 2030.

Fellow Lufthansa carrier SWISS announced on February 13 that it would go ahead with the "green fares" offering. Lufthansa Group followed up with a separate statement that the fares would make it "the world's first airline group to offer a specific fare for more sustainable travel".

"The new green fares will be offered by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Eurowings Discover and Air Dolomiti on more than 730,000 flights per year within Europe and to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia," Lufthanda said, in a similar statement released on February 16.

"The green fares were already successfully tested last year for flights from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. This showed that the demand for more sustainable travel offers is increasing," said Harry Hohmeister, member of the Lufthansa Group's executive board responsible for global markets and network.
