British Airways will launch two next-generation weather apps that will provide its pilots and flight planning teams access to real-time weather data provided. The apps will allow for better planning and mitigating the impact of weather on any intended flight route.
The first app will provide pilots access to streamlined weather data from The Weather Company. Additional updates will use onboard Wi-Fi connectivity to further support in-flight real-time weather updates. The second app will be used by its operational hub, which will work in conjunction with the pilot application.
""These applications represent a step-change in the quality of weather information we receive, and, in the future, will enable pilots to collaborate in real-time during a flight with operational colleagues on the ground, allowing faster decision-making for a variety of issues like diversion planning and recovery,"" said British Airways chief operating officer Rene de Groot.
Prior to the weather apps, the airline's teams rely on manually produced weather reports. The introduction of the paperless weather app systems are a part of British Airways' £7bn ($8.8bn) transformation investment programme. Earlier this year, British Airways launched its electronic aircraft maintenance system to replace its paper-based system.
