The six largest airlines in Brazil have agreed with aviation agency Anac request to increase the availability of aircraft and staff for the end of the year.
Tam and Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (GOL) said they will keep reserve aircraft on standby, stop overbooking, and fully staff all ticket counters during peak hours.
Anac officials also promised to increase monitoring during the December 17 to January 3 period.
Through the agreement, the hope is the travel chaos usually experienced by passengers during the holiday period will be avoided. Brazil has witnessed a surge in air travel, with domestic air traffic in the first 10 months of this year increasing by 25% and international flights up 21%. The unprecedented growth has strained the country's airports, which have failed to keep pace with demand.
A third airport is planned for Sao Paolo to help the country cope with the influx of tourist flocking to the country during the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
