Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency director Ricardo Fenelon Jr. has stated that Brazil doesn’t produce enough emissions to justify joining the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization proposed aviation emissions accord being brokered this month – at least in the initial stages.
He said that the country will wait to join the agreement when it’s expected to become mandatory in 2027. Fenelon called on other developing nations in the region to follow Brazil’s example.
Although many nations have already pledged their support, including the US, China, Indonesia Singapore, and 44 European countries, the loss of Brazil is a blow to the global accord especially since air transportation in the country and other countries in South America is expected to double in terms of passengers by 2034.
