Richard Branson, founder and chairman of Virgin Group, has commented that he would still be interested in setting up a domestic airline in India despite the difficulties being experienced by the sector.

He told one news outlet: “We are still considering setting up a domestic airline (in India) now that the laws have been changed; we still haven’t decided for definite one way or the other. Obviously, we want to be very careful not to run into the same troubles that some of the other domestic airlines had. But we are studying what’s happening in India and one day hopefully we will get a domestic airline set up.”

He added that any venture would need to have an Indian partner and it would be set up along the same lines as Virgin Australia.

Although there is “nothing immediately planned”, he said that he has “some people looking at it right now [to] see whether the market is too crowded or not and we will decide sometime in the next few months”.
