Boeing announces deals to buy 5.6 million gallons of blended SAF

Seattle-based airframe producer Boeing has put pen to paper on deals to procure 5.6 million gallons of blended s0-called sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The fuel is to be produced by Neste, the world's leading SAF supplier, and amounts to a doubling of the SAF bought by Boeing in 2022.

"We are demonstrating our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and catalyse the SAF industry," said Sheila Remes, Boeing's vice president of environmental sustainability.

The purchase agreements are for Neste MY SAF, which Boeing said is blended with conventional jet fuel at a 30/70 ratio and is made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as cooking oil and animal fat waste.

Boeing said it is also purchasing three million gallons of the same SAF from EPIC Fuels and Signature Aviation.

The SAF is "certified for commercial use and can currently be blended up to 50% with traditional jet fuel without modifications to airplanes, engines or fuelling infrastructure", said Boeing, which first tested SAF in 2008.,

In 2021 Boeing said it would "deliver its commercial airplanes capable and certified to fly on 100% SAF by 2030".

Boeing in 2022 reported a huge production backlog of over 7,000 aircraft, but has in recent weeks signed huge aircraft supply deals with United Airlines and Air India.
