Boeing and Airbus have both indicated their support for the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) adoption of a carbon-offset system, which puts in place the world’s first Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
In a statement, Boeing described CORSIA as an “historic agreement” that represents the world's first sector-based, global market mechanism to address climate change and is complementary to the first-ever CO2 standard for airplane emissions that ICAO adopted earlier this year. “These two significant agreements result from several years of collaboration by international experts from ICAO member states, the aviation industry and non-governmental organizations,” said Boeing.
Airbus reiterated its own support for the scheme: "Airbus is fully committed to all pillars of the industry's climate action plan through delivering the world’s most fuel efficient aircraft, supporting air traffic management and airport operations improvements around the world and facilitating the wider adoption of sustainable alternative fuels," said Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO of Airbus.
