Bmi will begin a daily Heathrow-Tripoli service from December 1. The service, which will be operated by an Airbus A319, is aimed at bolstering bmi's links for oil workers. Currently bmi flies oil workers from Aberdeen to Heathrow who switch to other carries to reach destinations in the Middle East. However, the airline is also touting Tripoli as a tourist destination.
Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, chief executive of bmi, says: “bmi's new route to Tripoli expands our existing services to and from cities of influence across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Our business customers in particular will find the new, daily service gives them even more choice between the UK and Libya and offers convenient domestic and long haul connections via our Heathrow hub.”
Bmi already flies to several countries, including Jeddah and Riyadh in the Middle East and Moscow and Almaty in Eastern Europe. The Tripoli service will complement bmi’s existing links to Africa – with services to Cairo, Khartoum, Addis Ababa and Freetown.
