Birmingham Airport hopes for "mind-blowing" hydrogen-fuelled flights by ZeroAvia

British company ZeroAvia, which in January tested a hydrogen-powered aircraft over Gloucestershire, has announced a "long-term partnership" with Birmingham Airport.

The partners hope to make  hydrogen-fuelled air travel "a reality" as ZeroAvia aims by 2025 to produce a "zero-emission system capable of flying 20-seat aircraft 300 nautical miles".

The deal "opens up the possibility of green air travel from Birmingham" by mid-decade, a prospect the airport's chief finance and sustainability officer Simon Richards said is "mind-blowing".

“We are thrilled to partner with ZeroAvia on creating solutions to the main challenge of our generation – protecting the future of our planet," said Richards.

“Birmingham Airport can be a central hub in a green flight network in the UK, given that any domestic mainland destination will be reachable from the airport using our first systems in 2025,” said Arnab Chatterjee, ZeroAvia's vice president, infrastructure.

ZeroAvia recently announced plans to start hydrogen-powered flights from Rotterdam by 2025.
