ATR is stopping the development of its short take-off and landing (STOL) variant, the ATR 42-600, as it seeks to reinstate its core business focus. The aircraft manufacturer said it will shift its efforts towards boosting the competitiveness of its current portfolio.
The company said the decision followed an “extensive market review” as well as continuing supply chain constraints.
ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude said the move will allow the company to address “emerging market demand more effectively” and includes “breaking into North America”. ATR is looking to replace ageing fleets of regional jets and boost point-to-point regional connections in the region.
ATR's market review had also revealed that the market for STOL aircraft was reduced as airports requiring STOL-capable aircraft had “significantly decreased”.
The company will now focus on its ATR 42-600 and 72-600 jets.
