Amsterdam Schiphol airport is currently testing the use of autonomous electric buses, with two driverless vehicles being used to transport employees airside via a fixed route.
“This trial represents another step towards our ambition of having an emission-free and autonomous ground operation by 2050,” explained Jan Zekveld, head of innovation at Royal Schiphol Group. “The knowledge and insights gained during this test period are of significant added value to future autonomous developments at Schiphol”.
Schiphol is the first Dutch airport to use this technology, supplied by autonomous bus provider Ohmio, to transport people amid other airside traffic. Each bus has the capacity to carry eight employees, and of those surveyed, 89% indicated they would be willing to use the service again. The trial will continue to run until the end of April, when the possibility of expansion will be considered.
