American Airlines is using its Smart Gating machine learning technology for the holiday season to shorten taxi times, reduce ramp congestion and help aircraft get to gates faster. The technology mitigates situations where arriving aircraft have to wait for an available gate.
The technology was developed by American’s information technology and operations teams. It uses real-time flight information and other data to automatically assign arriving aircraft to the nearest available gate. The technology was first tested at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 2021.
The technology is being used by American at the O’Hare International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Charlotte Douglas International, Miami International, and Dallas Fort Worth International airports.
American reports that the technology reduces the total taxi time by 17 hours a day and saves around 1.4 million gallons of jet fuel per year.
