American Airlines pilots to vote on going on strike

Pilots at American Airlines are to "conduct a membership strike authorisation vote", according to the board of directors at the Allied Pilots' Association (APA), which represents the carrier's pilots.

Contract negotiations between the airline's management and pilots are taking place, with chief executive Robert Isom saying on March 8 that American would match what was being offered at rival Delta Air Lines, which the week before announced a 34% raise for its pilots.

"Management must understand that they need to demonstrate the same level of commitment to bargaining that other airline management teams have shown in recent months," the APA said in a statement, adding that it "remains committed to reach an agreement with American Airlines management in the near term".
