New routes and larger fleets will lead to a significant increase in capacity for Algeria’s airline industry. The government is also attempting to boost tourist numbers, which will give a much-needed boost to local carriers. That said, analysts have warned of the continuing threat to home grown carriers due to intense competition and staff disputes that all could limit the benefits of the expansion campaign. There are also calls for Algeria to sign an open skies agreement with the EU and provide low-cost carriers (LLCs) with a way in to the market are growing.
National carrier, Air Algérie, is planning to buy new aircraft equivalent to nearly 40% of its fleet and will issue a tender to acquire 16 new aircraft to expand its fleet to 58 aircraft. The increased capacity will enable the airline to expand its presence in Africa by increasing the number of flights it operates to existing destinations as well as adding new routes. If a tentative agreement with Canada is approved, Air Algérie will also increase the frequency of its flights to the country to daily.
Tassili Airlines (TAL) is also planning to boost its fleet of 31 aircraft by up to six planes, to expand domestically.
