Delta Airlines is playing an increasingly larger role at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) threatening Alaska Airlines traditional dominance at the airport.
Delta has been building its domestic network at Sea-Tac since 2003 to add to its international schedules that include direct flights to major Asian and European destinations such as Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai in Asia and London, Amsterdam and Paris in Europe from Sea-Tac.
Alaska used to provide domestic feeder flights out of Sea-Tac to help Delta feed its international routes and its codeshare agreement with Delta remains in place. Alaska has however also been ramping up its direct domestic routes to New Orleans, Tampa, Baltimore and Albuquerque that compete directly with Delta.
Alaska appears to be winning the domestic battle and has retained its leadership in Sea-Tac market share of 51.5%. Delta controls just over 14%.
