European carriers have called on the European Commission to do more to "stop escalating industrial action from derailing summer travel for millions of passengers".
A statement by industry body Airlines For Europe (A4E) said strikes in 2023, including those by French air traffic controllers (ATCs) had already caused 3,000 flights to be cancelled and 23,000 to be delayed, affecting around 10 million passengers.
Among the measures A4E said it wants are mandatory arbitration before ATC unions can threaten to go on strike, a 21-day notice period ahead of strikes taking place, protection of overflights.
"While we respect the right to strike, the ripple effect of disruptions impacting flights between unrelated member states is untenable," said Laurent Donceel, acting managing director of A4E.
"Millions of Europeans are eager to travel this summer, and strikes stand to shatter their plans," Donceel added.
